Chitosan Reviews

Chitosan ReviewsChitosan is frequently marketed as a “fat absorber”, “fat blocker”, “fat binder” and “fat trapper” by several diet pill manufacturers. It is the generic ingredient of many slimming products that have been in the market for at least 20 years, all giving the same promise of limiting fat absorption in the body in order to lose weight. Chitosan is derived from chitin, a fiber found in the shells of crustaceans such as shellfish, shrimps and crabs, as well as in the cellular walls of fungi.

Chitosan promoters claim that it can absorb fats and lipids from 6-8 times its weight. Fats are supposed to be absorbed by Chitosan fibers, and excreted through the bowel, thereby preventing them from being stored in the body. However, most of these claims remain unsubstantiated by verifiable, scientific research. Consumers of this product should take caution on taking what is scientific fact and what is only speculated.

Chitosan Side Effects

One thing that can not be denied is the fact that Chitosan based-weight loss products can not be used by everyone, because people with allergies to sea food may have adverse reactions to it. Pregnant women and young teens are also advised not to use this product, because it can possibly lead to slower absorption of vitamins in the body. Regular intake of Chitosan can lessen the rate of absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, which can lead to vitamin depletion.

Chitosan Drawbacks

Although Chitosan is a popular weight loss ingredient, there have been some controversies surrounding it, mostly because its claims of being a “magic fiber” are largely unsubstantiated. Most diet pills that contain Chitosan claim that users of this product can still continue taking fatty foods without gaining weight. One famous case was Enforma Natural Products, Inc., the makers and marketers of Fat Trapper Plus which is a Chitosan-based formula. The company was fined $10 million by the Federal Trade Commission for making unsubstantiated claims about the efficacy of the product. The company has since then been prohibited to make further claims through their website and infomercials saying that Chitosan is a proven “fat blocker”.

Conclusion

When a product promises fast weight loss even without modifying your diet or doing exercises, it is most likely to be too good to be true. There have been no clinical evidences that can adequately prove the power of Chitosan in binding fats and in helping achieve fast weight loss.

Consumers should do their own research on the ingredients used for their diet supplements, as there are many manufacturers who do use false advertising.
